Slavery – A 21st Century Evil – Bonded Slaves

63

Slavery, a horrific practice that many believed was long eradicated, has unfortunately found new life in the 21st century. In parts of the world, the systemic enslavement of individuals, often passed down from generation to generation, continues to perpetuate the vicious cycle of bonded labor. Despite laws put in place to combat this issue, many governments have failed to enforce their own regulations, leaving the most vulnerable members of society at risk.

In this expose, Al Jazeera’s Rageh Omaar brings to light the disturbing reality of bonded slavery in Pakistan and India. Through his interviews with men, women, and children who are laboring in quarries, brick kilns, and other hazardous working conditions, we see the devastating impact of this ongoing problem. The slaves Omaar encounters have had their freedoms stripped from them, often for generations, as they struggle to pay off a supposed “loan” taken out by their grandparents.

This investigative report highlights the difficulties that come with escape from enslavement. While some have been fortunate enough to break free, others have had to resort to drastic measures, such as selling their organs, in order to pay off their supposed debts and regain their freedom.

This is a stark reminder that slavery continues to be a serious issue in our world today, and it is imperative that we work together to put an end to this inhumane practice. Whether it is through supporting anti-slavery organizations, or by simply spreading awareness about this issue, each one of us has the power to make a difference.
