Brazil banned slavery in 1888, yet the country's charcoal camps still run on forced labor. Men from the impoverished north are recruited with promises of paid work, then driven to remote forest camps where recruiters saddle them with debts for food, tools, and transport that their wages can never cover. The charcoal they burn feeds pig iron furnaces, and that pig iron becomes steel bought by major international manufacturers, including car companies, which gives the supply chain a direct line from a debt-bonded laborer in the Amazon to a finished product on a showroom floor. The film follows the workers inside these camps, documenting the living conditions and the mechanics of the debt trap that keeps them there long after they realize what has happened. It also traces where the charcoal goes after it leaves the camp, following the pig iron industry up the chain toward the companies that ultimately profit from cheap raw materials. The result is a straightforward account of how a centuries-old practice survives inside a modern industrial supply chain.
