Slices Special Issue
Richie Hawtin's path from a teenage electronics tinkerer to one of techno's defining names anchors this first entry in the Slices - Pioneers of Electronic Music DVD series. The film traces his upbringing as a transplanted, introverted kid drawn to computers and to the radio signals and record shops of Detroit, the city whose techno scene shaped his early sound. From there it follows his rise into a producer and performer known worldwide, and eventually into a label owner and entrepreneur running his own imprint and events business rather than just playing other people's stages. The material comes from new and previously unreleased photographs and video alongside interviews conducted specifically for the production, giving it access beyond standard press-kit footage. There's no narrator standing outside the story: the archive and the interviews carry the biography directly, tracking how a bedroom obsession with machines turned into a career built on them. As the opening installment of the Slices series, it sets the template other artist profiles in the collection would follow.
