Tupac Shakur narrates his own life story here, his voice assembled entirely from archival interviews and edited so the film plays as a first-person account rather than a biography told by others. Director Lauren Lazin builds the film with his mother Afeni Shakur, a former Black Panther, as producer, tracing his path from a childhood marked by poverty and instability through his rise as a rapper and actor to the shootings and legal trouble that shadowed his career, and finally his murder. The footage mixes concert performances, home movies, and pages from his poetry and personal diaries, giving the film access that no outside biographer could get. His own commentary on the rivalries, arrests, and contradictions of his public image runs under the images, so the film's throughline is his self-assessment rather than a narrator's judgment. Tracks from Tupac himself, along with Biggie Smalls, Eminem, and 50 Cent, fill out the soundtrack. This version carries Spanish narration and subtitles over the same original material.
