Amanda Todd was fifteen when she died by suicide in 2012, after years of online extortion that began with a stranger convincing her to expose herself on webcam and then circulating the image to her classmates and family. Mark Kelley of CBC's the fifth estate reconstructs the case from the other side, tracking the international police hunt for the man behind the account, eventually identified as Aydin Coban, arrested in the Netherlands and facing trial there in January 2017. The film uses Facebook messages, police interviews, and reporting across Canadian and Dutch jurisdictions to show how the same person allegedly targeted other teenagers using identical methods for years before Amanda's death, and it presses investigators on why those earlier reports never stopped him. Kelley's questions are pointed rather than sentimental: what did police in both countries know, when did they know it, and why did the pieces not connect sooner. The result is less a portrait of a victim than an audit of a failed response.
