Comedy has spent over a century getting people fired, banned, and arrested for jokes, and this film traces that history from vaudeville taboos through the shock comics and internet pile-ons of the 2010s. Director and narrator Mike Celestino, working with producer Robert Garren, builds the argument almost entirely from archival footage: old stand-up clips, censored sketches, news coverage of comedians hauled into court or dropped by networks. The film moves case by case through recurring flashpoints, race, religion, sex, and political satire, asking what actually separates a joke that ages fine from one that ends a career. Celestino narrates as an unabashed comedy fan rather than a neutral observer, and the film reads as his defense of the art form's right to offend as much as it is a history lesson. It premiered as the opening night selection at the Freethought Film Festival in 2014 and later won Best Documentary at the Flagler Film Festival. The question it keeps circling: who actually gets to decide what's off-limits, and why does that line keep moving?
