Ten reels trace the German invasion of the Soviet Union from June 1941 through the Red Army's encirclement of Nazi forces at Stalingrad in December 1942. The film opens with a sweep through Russian military history, Alexander Nevsky's 1242 victory over the German knights, the 1812 French retreat from Moscow, before mapping Axis expansion through Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, with footage of Hitler and Generals Keitel and Jodl planning the campaign. Street fighting in Sevastopol gives way to the siege of Leningrad: women clearing rubble, food rationed, supplies hauled by truck and tractor across frozen Lake Ladoga while German planes bomb the ice road. Stalin and Molotov appear at Kremlin gatherings, and Marshal Voronoff confers with his staff as Soviet troops close the ring around Stalingrad, where flamethrowers, rockets, and house-to-house fighting force the surrender of 22 German divisions. Closing maps tally Russian territorial gains and German losses to that point in the war. Produced as U.S. Army orientation material, the film argues its case through raw wartime footage rather than narration alone.
