Hernan Cortes lands in Mexico in 1519 with orders to negotiate, not conquer, and ignores them almost immediately. This episode of The Conquerors follows his campaign against the Aztec empire, from the first clash so violent that Aztec warriors retreat into the interior, unfamiliar with Spanish guns, horses, and steel armor, to the death of Montezuma and the fall of the empire within roughly two years. Host Dale Dye, a retired Marine captain, narrates the campaign's turning points, and the episode uses reenactments alongside interviews with historians to lay out how a small, often outnumbered Spanish force brought down a civilization three centuries old. The film does not soften the cost: hundreds of thousands of Aztecs die before the conquest is complete.
