A hypothetical dollar collapse unfolds hour by hour in this VPRO Backlight and NRC Handelsblad co-production, built as a fictional 24-hour scenario grounded in real economic analysis. At 9AM a trader in Singapore is ordered to dump a large dollar position, triggering a sell-off that the film then tracks across the globe, hour by hour, as it ripples through currency markets, trade, and everyday transactions. Economists and analysts including Stephen Roach and Andy Xie, journalist Maarten Schinkel, banker Cees Maas, security analyst Rob de Wijk, and politician Kees Vendrik appear throughout to explain what a debt-heavy American economy would actually do if confidence in the dollar broke. The scenario ends in Amsterdam, where a taxi driver refuses dollars altogether and will only take cigarettes as payment. Made in 2005, the film treats the fall of a reserve currency not as a disaster movie but as a plausible chain of decisions, each one small and rational on its own, adding up to something much larger.
