Some gay men, weary of condoms and safer-sex campaigns, start actively seeking HIV infection rather than avoiding it, a practice known as bug chasing. Director John Smith interviews men who attend so-called conversion parties, gatherings built around passing on the infection as a deliberate act framed as a gift, and asks them why. Psychologists and public health researchers weigh in on what drives the behavior, from fatalism and shame to a wish to belong to a community defined by shared status rather than shared risk. The film also traces how military and institutional policies like Don't Ask, Don't Tell pushed gay life further underground for decades, and argues that secrecy and stigma, not just individual choice, helped create the conditions bug chasing grows in. Interview subjects speak plainly about wanting the uncertainty to end, even at the cost of their health. The film treats a subject most outlets avoid entirely, and lets the men explain themselves in their own words rather than through outside judgment.
