Five civilizations built entire worlds around gods they believed controlled the harvest, the afterlife, and the fate of empires: Egypt, Greece, the Celtic lands, Rome, and the Inca. The film moves through each pantheon in turn, using historical reconstructions, artifacts, and footage of temple sites to show how belief translated into daily practice, from the priesthoods that ran Egyptian temple economies to the augurs reading omens for the Roman state. It pays attention to the mechanics of worship as much as the myths themselves, covering the rituals, sacrifices, and ceremonies that connected ordinary people to their gods and the architecture built to house them, including sites tied to Incan sun worship and Celtic sacred groves. Rather than treating these belief systems as isolated legends, the program traces how religious authority shaped governance, agriculture, and art in each culture, and how each pantheon eventually lost its hold as empires fell or new religions arrived. The throughline is practical: gods as institutions, not just stories.
