Aboriginal Australia's tribes, scattered across the continent long before European settlement, are the subject here, and an elder who has kept the old practices alive serves as guide through what remains of them. The camera follows him through rituals meant to reach a parallel world where gods, spirits, and men mix, and lingers on the didgeridoo, watching musicians carve and shape the instrument themselves before explaining the breathing technique that makes it sound. At Ubi Rock, cave paintings function as sacred totems tying each village to the land around it, and the film shows artists still painting today, continuing designs that record their dreams. Away from ceremony, men demonstrate how a boomerang is made, and the group shares a banquet built around a giant turtle caught earlier in the film. Against this the film sets the reserves, where the same communities live under conditions the film frames as a slow extinction, holding both the ceremony and the decline in the same frame without resolving the tension between them.
