Every week in Dalston, London, volunteers with The People's Kitchen collect food that shops, markets, and gardens would otherwise throw out, food that is still perfectly edible, and cook it into meals served to fifty to a hundred people. The film follows founder Steve Wilson and his friends as they run the operation and chase a specific goal: £10,000 in funding that would let them turn volunteer positions into paid jobs and spread the kitchen's model beyond London. Cameras stay close to the people who eat there as much as the people who cook, treating the kitchen as a place where people come to be fed and also to be seen, somewhere to find footing in a society that has often left them out. Running underneath the daily routine of collecting and cooking is a harder question the film keeps returning to: can a project built on scavenged food and unpaid labor actually last, and does it point to something the existing UK welfare system doesn't?
