John D. Rockefeller Sr. builds Standard Oil into a monopoly that makes him the most feared businessman in America, then spends his final decades giving away roughly half his fortune without ever fully shedding his reputation for ruthlessness. The film follows the family's second act, carried by his only son, John D. Rockefeller Jr., who treats the family name as a project to be rebuilt rather than a fortune to be spent. Junior gives away hundreds of millions of dollars across education, public health, art, and conservation, and sets strict expectations of decorum and public service for his six children, expectations they largely follow. By the time Junior dies at 86, he leaves 22 grandchildren an inheritance built as much on reputation as on money. The film traces how a name once tied to corporate greed becomes shorthand for philanthropy, using the two Rockefeller generations as a case study in how wealth tries to outlive its own origin story.
