Karachi is home to more than eighteen million people and, by 2011 figures cited in the film, saw more than three times as many killings as American drone strikes caused in Pakistan's tribal areas that same year. VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels through the city across five parts, meeting the people who run its underside: gang members, police, and residents navigating a city where sectarian and political violence runs alongside ordinary daily life. Alvi talks to men involved in the city's armed conflicts and to those trying to survive around them, using their accounts rather than statistics to make the scale of the violence concrete. The camera moves through neighborhoods rarely shown to outsiders, from checkpoints to informal power bases run by local strongmen. Alvi plays the direct, unguarded interviewer throughout, asking subjects about killings, extortion, and control as plainly as they're described. The series closes on a lighter note with a party scene, a deliberate contrast to everything shown before it.
