In January 1954, when the Korean War armistice frees prisoners to go home, twenty-one American soldiers refuse repatriation. Held instead in a neutral zone and given ninety days to reconsider, they choose to stay in China, a decision that lands back home in the middle of McCarthyism, where newspapers and officials insist the men must have been brainwashed. Director Shuibo Wang, an Oscar nominee for Sunrise Over Tiananmen Square, tracks down what actually happened using footage shot inside the Chinese camps that has not been shown before, alongside interviews with surviving former POWs and their families. The film lets the men and their relatives describe the politics, isolation, and family fallout of a choice most Americans read only as treason or delusion. It does not resolve the brainwashing question with a simple verdict, instead laying out how a handful of soldiers ended up defending a decision that made them strangers to their own country, decades after the Cold War that produced it had already faded from view.
