Women who sew clothes in Bangladesh's garment factories spend five years organizing themselves into unions, starting in 2010 when the mere act of speaking up on the shop floor could get a worker beaten, fired, or arrested. The film tracks that fight through two disasters that made international headlines, the Tazreen factory fire and the Rana Plaza collapse, and into the years after, when sustained pressure from the workers' movement starts to force real concessions from owners and government. Made by Rainbow Collective and Openvizor, the film combines characters and footage from two earlier documentaries, The Machinists and Tears in the Fabric, with new material shot in 2015 with women still on the front line of the struggle. The camera stays with union members and leaders rather than outside experts, so the account of strikes, crackdowns, and slow gains comes directly from the women living it. Five years compressed into one narrative of grief, organizing, and incremental victory.
