
Universe: The Cosmology Quest
Halton Arp spent decades photographing quasars that sit suspiciously close, in the sky, to galaxies with very different redshifts, and argued the pairings were physically connected rather than coincidental. That claim broke a rule cosmologists treat as settled: redshift measures distance, so two objects with different redshifts cannot be near each other in real space. The film follows Arp's case against the mainstream model, built on decades of his own photographic plates and catalogs of these anomalous pairs, and the professional cost of pressing it, including losing telescope time at Palomar Observatory after journals stopped publishing his papers. Astronomers on both sides appear on camera, some defending the standard expanding-universe reading of redshift, others taking Arp's alternative seriously enough to keep testing it. Visual simulations lay out what an expanding universe requires redshift to mean, then show the galaxy-quasar images that don't fit. The film does not resolve the dispute; it uses Arp's career to ask how cosmology handles evidence that contradicts its foundational assumptions.
