The vampire myth predates Bram Stoker by centuries, and this film traces where the blood-drinking corpse legend actually comes from before Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula fixed its modern image. It follows the historical thread back to Vlad the Impaler, the 15th-century Transylvanian ruler whose campaign against the Ottoman Empire left a documented record of impalement and mass cruelty that later attached itself to Stoker's character. From there the film widens out to folklore from Australia, China, and India, comparing local undead legends that developed independently of the European tradition. A recurring thread is decomposition itself: bodies that bloated, changed color, or appeared to have fresh blood at the mouth after death, misread by communities without forensic science as evidence the dead were rising. The film looks at artifacts and burial practices, including grave goods and restraints, that people used to keep suspected vampires from returning. It treats the legend as a case study in how real corpses, real violence, and real fear of disease got folded into a single monster.
