Varanasi sits on the Ganges as one of Hinduism's holiest cities, and photographer Joey L. travels there with his assistant Ryan to shoot portraits of the sadhus, the holy men who live in its temples and ashrams. Director Cale Glendening follows the pair through the city's narrow lanes and ghats as Joey sets up his camera and lighting rigs in front of men covered in ash and body paint, mid-meditation or mid-ritual. Interviews with the sadhus explain what the markings and practices mean and how they see their own role in the city's religious life, while aerial shots place their small daily rituals against the scale of the river and the crowds that gather along it. The film stays close to the mechanics of the shoot itself, showing how much access Joey and Ryan negotiate to get inside spaces usually closed to outsiders, and lets the resulting photographs, along with a score mixing traditional Indian music with contemporary production, carry as much of the story as the narration does.
