Marijuana in the United States swings from Schedule I felony to state-sanctioned medicine within a single generation, and this film tracks both sides of that reversal. It opens inside a Colorado home that has never let television cameras in before, following a family raising Charlotte Figi, a child with Dravet Syndrome whose seizures were finally reduced by a cannabis strain low in THC and high in CBD, a strain her father found after watching online video of a California boy treated the same way. The history runs backward from there: Harry Anslinger, the country's first drug czar, campaigning against marijuana in the 1930s, the propaganda film Reefer Madness following close behind, and the drug's criminalization in 1937 followed by its 1970 classification as having no accepted medical use. Doctors and researchers explain what THC and CBD actually do in the brain, and journal articles from the 1840s through 1930 documenting cannabis treatments for neuralgia and convulsive disorders complicate the government's later position. Dispensaries, festivals, and private clubs show what legalization looks like in practice.
