White Americans sit for interviews across fifteen U.S. cities, including San Francisco, Oakland, Albuquerque, Chicago, and Atlanta, talking through what it means to be white, how their ancestors came to be classified that way, and where their own attitudes about race actually sit. Filmmaker Mark spent several years gathering the footage, and the candor varies widely: one man says flatly, "I don't have any trouble admitting that I'm a racist," while another says he dislikes being a white man because of what people like him have done historically. Several interviewees trace how European immigrants anglicized their names and dropped ethnic customs to be absorbed into a single white category, tying whiteness to assimilation and social mobility rather than any fixed trait. The film also gets into the gap between personal prejudice and the larger systems that outlast any one person's beliefs, and asks what, if anything, white viewers are supposed to do once they see the construct clearly. No narrator frames the answers; the interviews are left to contradict each other.
