Witness – Far from home

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) marks its 60th anniversary with the launch of a new campaign, One is too many, highlighting the ongoing struggles faced by the 15 million refugees and internally displaced persons across the world. While their stories are often filled with turmoil, dislocation, and suffering, there are also tales of triumph and perseverance, of individuals and families who have risen above the odds and found their way to a brighter future.

Filmmaker Lynn Raineault has documented these inspiring journeys in her series, Witness – Far From Home. The fourth story in the series focuses on the Tayem family, who braved the dangers and uncertainties of their home country, Iraq, to start a new life in Vancouver, Canada. Through the film, we see their resilience in the face of adversity and their unwavering determination to build a better future for themselves and their loved ones.

The journey of the Tayem family is not unique. Across the world, refugees and internally displaced persons face an array of challenges, from navigating complex bureaucratic processes to adapting to new cultures and environments. Despite these obstacles, they often display remarkable strength and resourcefulness, as they work to rebuild their lives and create new beginnings.

The Tayem family’s story is a testament to the human spirit and its ability to overcome even the most difficult of circumstances. Despite the hardships they faced, they never lost sight of their goal and never gave up on their dreams. Their journey serves as a reminder of the resilience of the human soul and the importance of supporting those in need.

As the UNHCR marks its 60th anniversary, it is essential that we continue to raise awareness and support for the millions of refugees and internally displaced persons around the world. They deserve our compassion and our help, as they work to overcome the challenges they face and build a brighter future for themselves and their loved ones.
