Wonders of the Universe: Falling
Gravity holds galaxies together yet is, pound for pound, the weakest of the four fundamental forces. Brian Cox opens this episode aboard a zero-gravity flight, using the brief weightlessness to show what happens when the force disappears, then works outward to explain how something so feeble still governs the orbits of planets and the shape of galaxies simply by acting on enormous masses over enormous distances. A human centrifuge demonstrates what extra gravity does to the body, pinning blood and organs under g-forces well beyond anything felt on Earth. At the other extreme, Cox turns to neutron stars, where gravity crushes matter so densely that its pull can reach 100,000 million times what we feel standing on the ground. The episode moves between these hands-on demonstrations and location footage to build a single argument: gravity's apparent weakness is deceptive, and its patience, working on matter across billions of years and light-years, is what shaped the universe into the structure it has now.
