10 Things You Didn't Know About Orgasm

17 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Science writer Mary Roach, author of "Bonk," spends this talk running through ten research findings about sexual climax, most of them pulled from studies she calls too strange or too embarrassing to make the evening news. She cites a Danish sneeze-and-orgasm case study, a British survey on foot fetishism, and rabbit experiments from the 1930s tracking ovulation triggered by mating, then turns to human research on brain scans taken during climax and the surprising list of things besides sex that can produce one. Roach delivers the material as stand-up as much as lecture, reading old scientific papers aloud for their unintentional comedy while making a real point underneath the jokes: this subject has been studied seriously, carefully, and for a long time, just not very publicly. The tone stays clinical rather than graphic, closer to a science museum talk than anything explicit, and the ten claims are the whole structure of the piece, delivered briskly with slides of the original research behind her.
