Europe at the turn of the first millennium serves as the subject here, a continent still shaking off the wreckage of Rome's collapse and not yet the map of nations it would become. The film moves region by region, from the Viking raids in the north to the fractured kingdoms of the former Carolingian empire, tracing the wars, alliances, and power struggles that defined the era just before the year 1000. Rulers, warlords, and clergy jostle for control of territory and legitimacy, with the Church emerging as one of the few institutions holding fragmented Europe together. The film treats the period not as a dark interlude but as a formative one, laying out how borders, dynasties, and religious authority that would shape the medieval centuries ahead were already taking rough shape. It works as a broad survey for viewers who know the Roman collapse and the later medieval world but have little sense of what filled the gap between them.
