On the Swedish island of Gotland, a mass grave holds the remains of men killed in a 1361 battle between local militia and invading Danish forces. The investigation moves between excavation trenches, church burial grounds, and the battlefield itself, reading trauma directly off the bones: skull fractures, blade wounds, and the wear patterns that suggest untrained farmers standing against professional soldiers. Specialists compare weapon types recovered nearby against the wounds themselves, testing whether the popular story of a peasant militia slaughtered by mercenaries holds up under close examination. The team also works through parish records and burial patterns to work out who was buried where, and why some bodies ended up in a single pit rather than individual graves. It is forensic history built from physical evidence rather than chronicle accounts, following the same approach the Medieval Dead series has used at other European battle sites.
