Northern Ireland, March 1988: fourteen days that push the Troubles to the edge of open war. The film opens in Gibraltar, where SAS soldiers shoot dead three unarmed IRA members after intelligence from an informer inside the organization exposes their bombing plot. Days later, at Milltown Cemetery in Belfast, Loyalist gunman Michael Stone attacks mourners at their funeral with grenades and a pistol, killing three men before police drag him from the crowd. The cycle closes at the funeral of one of Stone's victims, when two British Army corporals drive into the cortege by accident and are dragged from their car, beaten, and shot dead by a mob convinced they are Loyalist attackers. Archival news footage and interviews reconstruct each event as it happened and as it was reported at the time. Running through the chaos is Redemptorist priest Fr Alec Reid, who administers last rites to the corporals and works to keep the violence from tipping into full civil war. The film treats the fortnight as a hinge point, showing how close the peace process came to never starting.
