18 With a Bullet

Inside San Salvador, members of Barrio 18 talk on camera about the daily grind of gang life: turf disputes, funerals, prison visits, and the ever-present threat of their rival, MS-13. The film follows young men and women who joined the gang as children, some now raising children of their own inside the same cycle of violence, and lets them describe what pulled them in and what, if anything, might get them out. Interviews are shot in the neighborhoods themselves rather than in a studio, with cramped houses, cinderblock walls, and makeshift shrines to the dead as the backdrop. Police and family members appear alongside gang members, giving the film more than one vantage point on the same streets. There is little narration; the structure is built from testimony and observed scenes rather than statistics or expert analysis. The result is a ground-level record of a war fought mostly by teenagers, with no resolution offered because the conflict the film documents had none.
