The first part follows American camera teams into Cologne after its capture and to the newly seized bridge at Remagen, showing returning residents picking through their ruined city. The second tracks the American push through Germany to the Elbe River, culminating in the first handshake between US and Soviet troops. The third moves south with Stevens's unit into fallen Nuremberg, then to Dachau concentration camp, where his crew films survivors and an evacuation transport from the eastern death camps; Stevens later compared the scene to Dante's visions of hell. The series closes at Obersalzberg, Hitler's Alpine retreat, as photojournalists arrive in early May. Restored to color throughout, the footage puts faces on both the defeated and the liberated, and narration stays sparse, letting the camera teams' own images carry the record.
