Testimonials from people who lived through the events sit alongside the reenactments, tracking the chain reaction from Poland's Solidarity movement through Hungary's opened border, the mass exodus of East Germans, and the crowds who eventually tore into the Berlin Wall. Rather than a single national story, the film follows how decisions in one capital forced the hand of leaders in another, building a continent-wide collapse out of individual, deniable choices. The lip-synced reconstruction technique is unusual and occasionally uncanny, but it lets the film dramatize conversations no camera ever recorded.
