Sixteen mustangs, wild and unbroken, become the tool for a different kind of therapy in this film about Heroes and Horses, a program built for combat veterans struggling after service. The film cites a grim statistic up front: twenty percent of veterans with PTSD end up addicted to drugs. Rather than clinical treatment, the program sends former soldiers into the wilderness with these horses on a demanding trek, pairing each man with an animal that has never been ridden and forcing both to build trust from nothing. Footage follows the veterans through the physical work of gentling a mustang, the setbacks when an animal balks or a rider loses patience, and the slower psychological shift that follows. Interviews with participants connect the horsemanship directly to their own experience of combat and homecoming, framing the horses as mirrors for men who no longer trust their own instincts. The film stays close to the process itself, less interested in theory than in showing what changes when a veteran has to earn an animal's confidence one day at a time.
