At 8:46 am on September 11, 2001, the first hijacked airplane struck the World Trade Center, beginning an attack that DW reconstructs almost minute by minute using archival footage, audio recordings, and findings from the 9/11 Commission Report. The film tracks the day simultaneously in the air, at Ground Zero, in television newsrooms, and inside the centers of power in Washington, tracing how four planes became weapons aimed at the economic, military, and political symbols of the United States. It also goes back to 1999, when Osama bin Laden first devised the plan, and lays out the intelligence failures that preceded it, including CIA leads on known terrorists that were never connected into a coherent warning. Rather than dwelling on spectacle, the documentary stays close to the chronology and the institutional response, building a sober account of missed signals, real-time chaos, and the attack's lasting global consequences.
