Stephen Hawking, the Cambridge cosmologist who lost nearly all voluntary movement to motor neurone disease, is the subject here, and the film builds its portrait from interviews with him and with family, colleagues, and former students, intercut with archival footage of his early academic years. It traces his path from a physically active childhood and Oxford undergraduate life into the diagnosis that confined him to a wheelchair, and follows how that same period produced his work on black holes and the origins of the universe. The film treats the science and the biography as one story rather than two, using his ideas about cosmology to frame what his body could no longer do and his mind kept doing anyway. Rather than narrating over him, it lets Hawking's own synthesized voice and the people around him describe the theories and the daily reality of his condition side by side, including the practical difficulty of communicating complex physics through a speech synthesizer.
