A History of God

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Karen Armstrong's history of the idea of God anchors this feature-length film, tracing how the concept of a single deity took shape and shifted across more than 4,000 years. The film moves through Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, tracking how each tradition inherited, argued with, and reshaped the God of Abraham, from the polytheism of the ancient Near East to the monotheistic breakthroughs credited to figures like Moses and Muhammad. Scholars and theologians appear on camera alongside Armstrong's own commentary, walking through mystics, philosophers, and reformers who each pushed the definition of the divine in a new direction, including the rationalists of medieval Spain and the mystics of Kabbalah and Sufism. Archival art, manuscripts, and historical sites illustrate the argument rather than decorate it. Rather than settling on one answer, the film treats God as a moving target, a concept people have built, dismantled, and rebuilt to fit the needs of their own era, and ends with the modern crisis of belief that Armstrong's book was written to address.
