A Schoolgirl's Odyssey

2011 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Adam B. Ellick's camera follows a girl in Pakistan's Swat Valley through six months that upend her life: the Taliban's edict closing girls' schools, her family's flight into exile, and an uncertain return home once the fighting eases. Filmed on the ground in Swat as the conflict between the Pakistani military and Taliban forces displaces millions, the documentary tracks one household's daily decisions under that pressure, from hiding schoolbooks to weighing whether it is safe to go back. Interviews with the girl and her family sit alongside footage of empty classrooms and the roads out of the valley, giving a personal shape to a regional upheaval usually described only in casualty counts and troop movements. The film became notable later as an early record of Malala Yousafzai before her shooting made her internationally known, but on its own terms it is a close, unadorned account of what losing access to school actually looks like for one child and one family.
