Hong Kong architect Gary Chang shows how he turned his childhood home, a 344 square foot flat, into a space that reconfigures into 24 different layouts. Sliding walls and suspended panels shift the room from bedroom to kitchen to home theater to guest quarters, all without adding a single square foot. The film follows Chang through his own apartment as he demonstrates the mechanisms by hand, walls rolling on tracks to reveal a bathtub or a second bed, and explains the reasoning behind each panel's placement, born from decades of living in cramped Hong Kong housing. The piece treats the apartment less as a gadget than as a personal history, since Chang grew up in the same rooms with his family before redesigning them as an adult. It is a short, close look at how one designer answers an acute local problem, chronic space scarcity, with architecture that moves instead of expands.
