A Trace of the Sun: Volunteering in Japan

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

After the 2011 earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's northeastern coast, singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles and her band travel to the affected region to join the volunteers rebuilding shattered communities. The film follows them as they work alongside local aid workers, clearing debris and spending time with residents who lost homes and family members. Interviews with survivors sit alongside footage of the physical labor involved in recovery, from hauling wreckage to rebuilding basic infrastructure. Bareilles appears not as a narrator delivering commentary but as a participant learning the scale of the disaster firsthand, and the camera stays close to the everyday work rather than staging dramatic moments. The film is modest in scope, focused on one group's small contribution to a much larger recovery effort still underway months after the headlines had moved on. It ends without resolution, since the rebuilding it documents was far from finished.
