A Very Sicilian Justice

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Chief prosecutor Antonino Di Matteo has spent years building cases against the Sicilian Mafia from inside Palermo's Palace of Justice, living under armed escort because of standing threats on his life. This Al Jazeera film follows him through the practical texture of that work: interviews in fortified offices, meetings with investigators, and the daily calculus of prosecuting an organization with a documented history of assassinating judges who got too close. The film traces the legacy of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the magistrates murdered by the Mafia in 1992, and asks whether their deaths changed anything or simply set the price for doing this job. Di Matteo's own case centers on allegations of a negotiated understanding between the Italian state and Cosa Nostra, a claim that has made him as many enemies inside government as within organized crime. The camera stays close to the routines of protection, the paperwork of prosecution, and the toll of running a case that powerful people would prefer buried.
