Afghanistan's national cricket team has climbed from outsider status to the sport's top ranks, giving a crisis-ridden country one of its few reasons to celebrate. DW Documentary follows the players and fans behind that rise, including Gulbadin Naib, who went from a childhood refugee camp to international acclaim, and young hopefuls like Jamal Stanikzai training in the hope of joining the national side. But the Taliban's return to power has cut the story in two: while men's cricket flourishes and becomes a tool the government can use for legitimacy at home and abroad, the women's national team has been dissolved and its players scattered. Former women's player Firooza Amiri, now in exile, describes the game as both a passion and an act of resistance. Shot across Afghanistan, Australia and Dubai, the film moves between packed stadiums and refugee communities, weighing what cricket's success actually means when half the population is barred from playing it.
