The Africa Mercy is the largest non-governmental hospital ship in the world, sailing to ports along the African coast to deliver surgery and medical care to communities without reliable power or clean water. The film goes on board to follow the crew, mostly volunteers, as they convert cargo decks into operating theaters and wards, and treat patients who would otherwise have no access to specialists for conditions like cleft palates, cataracts, and tumors. Cameras follow surgeons through operations and check in with patients before and after treatment, showing the physical transformation the ship makes possible. The documentary also covers the logistics behind keeping a floating hospital running: docking procedures, power and water systems, and coordination with local health ministries to identify patients in need. It is a portrait of a specific piece of engineering and medical infrastructure built to reach places conventional hospitals cannot, and of the people who staff it far from home.
