In September 1588, the Spanish galleon San Pedro breaks apart on the Sligo coast, one of dozens of Armada ships wrecked along Ireland's western shore after the failed invasion of England. Captain Francisco de Cuéllar survives the wreck and spends the next seven months moving through a country at war with itself, sheltered by Gaelic lords, hunted by English forces, and at one point pressured into a marriage he does not want. His own written account, composed after he finally reaches Spanish-held territory, supplies the film's spine, and the documentary follows his route through Sligo, Ulster, and eventually back to the Continent. Historians and Armada specialists fill in what Cuéllar's letter leaves out: the politics of Elizabethan Ireland, the local clans deciding whether to help or hand over the shipwrecked Spaniards, and the odds against any of them reaching home. The result is less a naval history than a survival story, told through the words of a man who lived it and the landscape that nearly killed him.
