After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Fake news stops being an abstraction here the moment it lands on real people. The film tracks Pizzagate from a fabricated online rumor to a man firing a rifle inside a Washington, D.C. pizzeria, and follows the Seth Rich murder conspiracy as it metastasizes from anonymous forum posts into a story amplified by cable news and political operatives, causing lasting harm to his grieving family. Journalists, researchers, and some of the people who spread these stories explain how platforms like Facebook, Reddit, and 4chan reward outrage and repetition over accuracy, and how foreign disinformation campaigns learned to exploit the same mechanics for political ends. Interviews move between the writers debunking these stories in real time and the ordinary people swept up in believing or spreading them. The film treats the 2016 and 2020 U.S. elections as the backdrop against which disinformation stopped being a curiosity and became infrastructure, with real consequences for the people caught inside the stories.
