Journalists, researchers, and some of the people who spread these stories explain how platforms like Facebook, Reddit, and 4chan reward outrage and repetition over accuracy, and how foreign disinformation campaigns learned to exploit the same mechanics for political ends. Interviews move between the writers debunking these stories in real time and the ordinary people swept up in believing or spreading them. The film treats the 2016 and 2020 U.S. elections as the backdrop against which disinformation stopped being a curiosity and became infrastructure, with real consequences for the people caught inside the stories.
