After Windrush

26 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Paulette Wilson worked and paid taxes in Britain for 37 years before a letter arrived telling her she was an illegal immigrant. The film follows her and others swept up in the Windrush scandal, in which people who arrived from the Caribbean as children, decades before anyone asked for paperwork, suddenly found themselves classified as undocumented, denied jobs and medical care, and in some cases detained or threatened with deportation. Interviews trace how a hostile-environment immigration policy, built to make life difficult for people without status, ended up catching citizens who had never needed to prove anything before. The film sits with the shock and anger of people confronting a government that destroyed the very landing cards that could have proven their right to be there. It is a portrait of bureaucratic failure measured in individual lives, told mostly through the people who lived it rather than through officials explaining it away.
