Age of Easy Money

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

FRONTLINE traces the Federal Reserve's decade-plus experiment with near-zero interest rates and quantitative easing, starting with the 2008 financial crisis and running through the pandemic response. Economists, former Fed officials, and ordinary borrowers explain how cheap money was meant to rescue a collapsing banking system and stabilize employment, then became the default tool for every subsequent shock. The film follows the money as it inflates stock and housing prices, rewards Wall Street speculation, and eventually feeds the inflation spike that hit grocery bills and rent checks after 2020. Interviews lay out the tradeoffs plainly: savers earning nothing on their deposits, first-time buyers priced out of homes, and a central bank forced to slam on the brakes with rapid rate hikes to undo what it started. Archival footage of Fed press conferences and congressional hearings anchors the timeline. The documentary treats the Fed's choices as a real experiment with real casualties, asking what happens when a temporary emergency measure becomes the permanent operating system of the economy.
