Alexander the Great died before turning thirty-three, yet by then he had toppled the Persian Empire and pushed a Macedonian army as far as India. This film traces that campaign from his boyhood in Macedon under Philip II and Aristotle's tutoring through the battles at Issus and Gaugamela that broke Darius's forces, into Egypt where he was declared a living god, and onward through the grueling marches into Bactria and the Punjab. Historians walk through the sites and sources, weighing what actually happened against the image later generations built on top of it: the Greek and Roman hero, the Arab prophet-king Iskandar, the Western myth of the invincible conqueror. The film pays attention to the cost of the campaign too, the mutiny his own soldiers eventually staged, and the empire that fractured into rival kingdoms within a few years of his death. It treats Alexander less as a settled legend than as a case study in how history and myth get tangled together in one man.
