A robotic probe crosses interstellar space to Darwin IV, a fictional planet 6.5 light years from Earth, and the film follows its mission as if the footage were real. Two aerial scout drones and a lander named Balboa touch down first, mapping terrain and beaming back images of a world built entirely from CGI extrapolation rather than stock footage: bioluminescent flyers, predators with sonar instead of eyes, and plant life that competes for sunlight in ways no Earth forest does. Real scientists, including Stephen Hawking, Michio Kaku, and George Lucas collaborator Wayne Barlowe, whose paintings inspired the project, appear on camera to explain the evolutionary logic behind each creature design, arguing for what alien biology would plausibly need to survive rather than what looks strange for its own sake. The probe's eventual encounter with the planet's dominant life form drives the back half of the film. Framed as a simulated mission rather than pure speculation, it treats astrobiology as a design problem with testable rules, and the creature effects remain the reason to watch.
