Amazonia: The Price of Life

2014 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Brazil's environmental agency IBAMA takes center stage as it tracks down networks smuggling rare plants and animals out of the Amazon. The film follows agents on raids and inspections aimed at biopirates, operators who capture parrots, reptiles, and rare orchids for buyers abroad willing to pay far more than any legal market allows. Interviews with IBAMA officers lay out how the trafficking routes work, from remote river villages to international ports, and what gets lost when a species is stripped from its habitat for profit. The film treats this as a slow-moving crime story, showing seizures, confiscated animals awaiting release or rehabilitation, and the bureaucratic and physical difficulty of policing a forest the size of a continent. It is less interested in scenery than in enforcement, framing the Amazon's biodiversity as a resource under active theft rather than a passive backdrop, and asking what protecting it actually requires on the ground.
