Papua New Guinea's interior draws travelers with a reputation few places on earth still carry: a land where remote tribes were said to practice cannibalism and outsiders who wandered in did not always come back. This film follows that reputation into the highlands and river valleys, tracking how isolation, ritual warfare, and folklore about eating one's enemies shaped both the tribes' own customs and the fear that kept colonizers and missionaries at bay for generations. Footage moves through village ceremonies, body decoration, and encounters between visitors and local communities, letting the people on camera describe their own history and beliefs rather than filtering everything through outside narration. The film treats the cannibalism question directly, weighing documented history against exaggeration and rumor, and asks what the label of "savage" has actually done to how the wider world sees Papua New Guinea. It is as much about the island's remaining isolation from globalization as it is about the practices that made it notorious, and it ends without resolving how much of the old fear was ever true.
