American Nomads

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Beneath the settled, suburban image of the United States, this film finds a parallel country that never stopped moving. Based on Richard Grant's book of the same name, it tracks the descendants of conquistadors, mountain men, cowboys, and Native tribes alongside modern hobos, truckers, and RV drifters who still choose the road over a fixed address. Grant rides along with rodeo cowboys, sits with elders on reservations, and talks to boxcar-hopping travelers who explain why permanence never appealed to them. The film moves through open range, rail yards, and highway rest stops, using these encounters to trace a thread of restlessness running from Spanish explorers to present-day drifters. Historians and the nomads themselves make the case that this rootless population, often dismissed as marginal, has shaped American identity as much as the settlers who stayed put. It is a portrait of a country built on movement, told through the people who never signed on to stop.
